Fall River Free Barbecue
3rd Saturday in September
The Fall River Booster Club held its first City-sponsored, free barbecue on Sept 25, 1965.
Every year, approximately 1,500 pounds of beef are cooked in a pit for the barbecue. Between 3-4 AM on Friday, the pit is filled with four to five truckloads of hedge wood, to the top of the ground, and lit on fire. The coals are then covered with sand and the burlap-wrapped beef is placed on the sand, after which it is covered with tin, then sand, to seal it. The meat slowly cooks for more than 24 hours.
The meat is then brought from the pit and shredded. At least twenty gallons of barbecue sauce is needed for the meal. The secret-recipe sauce is made by local men and women, using six gallons of ketchup and many other ingredients.
200 pounds of beans and 100 pounds of ham are cooked in large cast iron kettles. Supper is served at 6 p.m. We often serve more than a thousand hungry guests, many from distant places.
The day starts early, with free breakfast and vendors of many types of merchandise, much of it hand-made. All sorts of activities are held throughout the day for all ages.
A raffle is held after dinner for 150 pounds of beef and various other prizes, and there is the crowning of Ms. Fall River. At 9 PM, there are fireworks and street dancing, as we celebrate a long, enjoyable day.
The Booster Club works hard every year, and all is paid for with donations.
